How to remove old servers

I need a solution

Hi, we have Netbackup 7.0.1 running on Windows 2008 R2. All media servers have same version. i have couple of questions:

1. When i am configuring new tape drives today using Configure Tape storage wizard i noticed it is listing old media servers which have already been decomissioned (using nbdecomission command). Why they are still coming in the list of media servers. How to remove them from that list?

2. Also i was runningnbcc and it found some images which belongs to media servers which are already decomissioned. How to get list of these images which shows image owner so i can identify which images need to be migrated. And also how i can move those images to new media server?

3. Also on Credntials tab we have all NDMP hosts which also lists all media servers. When we are adding new NDMP host it is adding al lavailable media servers to list. Is there a way to limit this to only specific media servers? also i have many NDMP hosts which shows old media servers. How to remove them?

Client Based Encryption (Master: Windows, Client: Linux)

Encryption mode: Client encryption

Recently upgrade the master server to 7.5.0.5 but clients are yet to be migrated/upgraded to this level, currently clients are in the 6.5.x versions.

I have a need to build a new client (linux server) with a requirement to maintain the environment as close to the production as possible, hence went ahead and installed 6.5.6 but realised something has changed in how the setup of the clients encryption is meant to work. Previous versions, I needed to run the following, a process that copies files to the client

bpinst -ENCRYPTION <client>

following which, I would set the passphrase using following command

bpkeyutil -insert -clients <client>

These were in my documentation but realised now that the master servers bpinst has changed and does not have the -ENCRYPTION option, anyone done this?

At this point it means I can't proceed with the client setup which needs the encryption set to be able to restore from production media.

Please note still need to maintain many clients at 6.5.6 for now hence a solution that would allow me to setup this new server is required.

Recovering a Windows 8 computer with SSR 2013

There are several other threads here about issues with restoring a Windows 8 computer failed hard drive with SSR 2013.  I don't want to rehash them, but I have a related question and suggestion.

Given that there are multiple partitions on a Windows 8 computer hard drive other than the primary c: drive, and that I may not or cannot backup ALL of the partitions, or can ONLY backup the c: partition,

How can I restore/recover just the c: partition onto a new/blank hard drive, and get my operational Windows 8 pc working again?

This is not addressed in the SSR 2013 User Guide that I can find, but I think it is a logical question that can often happen when a restore from the System Recovery Disc CD is only able to restore the C: partition.

I think the process "might" be something similar to the following, but I'd like to have this confirmed in a TechNote or other official document (or from someone who has actually successfully done this):

1. Turn off pc
2. Replace failed hard drive with new/blank/unused hard drive.
3. Boot from SSR 2013 SRD CD (do you have to use the 64bit version?)
4. Select Recovery Point for c: drive backup image from external hard drive (or other location where it is stored).
5. Select options to Make partiton active, etc. ??
6. Restore
7. Attempt boot but get boot failure error.
8. Boot from Windows 8 System Repair disk.  What options to choose?  What if I don't have a Windows 8 SRD?
9. Try again

Perhaps considerations for type of UEFI mode, etc. or other considerations?  Will the repaired Windows 8 installation active ok?

This would be a very very helpful guide (with screen shots and arrows etc.) to pro-actively have in advance and included in the manual or TechNote.

I hope someone that has actually and successfully done this can shed some light.  Is it possible?  If I don't have the OEM, diagnostic, System Reserved Partition(s), etc. and ONLY the c: backup image, can I still get back in business?  If so, then I won't worry as much about backing up those related ones.

Backup Exchange 2003 and updating catalog too long

Dear all,

We recently upgrade to BE 2012 and switch the backup from our old backup server BE 11d to the new one.

We found that the BE 2012 backup exchange 2003 run successfully but the update catalog take very long time to process.

It was already used 20+ hours and still running.

Is there any way to solve this problems.

change storage server ip address

I need a solution

Hi all,

I have to move my OST appliance to new IP backup segment, it means to change storage server definition in Credentials. But there are still plenty of valid backups using this target. 

I could not find out how to change ip address, registraton name (it is derived from ip address) of used storage server on the fly. Even NBU cannot delete the registered storage server because there are disk pool and storage unit with valid backups.

Please, do you have any idea how to solve this?

Backup failing with error code 25

Media server OS: Linux

Media server NBU Version: 7.1.0.1

Client OS: solaris 10

Client NBU version: 7.1

client is : usnbum9001

Media server : usnbub9500

telnet to 13782 is working fine from client to media but when i am trying to telnet to bpcd it is giving below error

Backup Exec 2010 R3 Stuck in Queue

I need a solution

I have a sheduled backup job that start to run from 7pm which backup on two tapes,  when it riches around 1.7 TB ( in which when succeed reaches about 1.9 TB), it stuck. It dozen't give any error ( even in Windows Event Log). It just give the alert "Please insert overwrite-able media " . When i cancel the job and perform inventory it succeed. The most wired is that, when i see the job history while the job is queue, it shows me there are many jobs still running but when i see the job history after canceling the job , it show all completed ( except the verifications) and the only error it shows is that the job cancellation i performed.

Error EF3000E. Snapshot failure while using Volume Shadow Copy Service. Please check application event log for VSS Errors.

Failed to make Backup Exec 2012 Custom SDR DVD

I need a solution

Hi,

I failed to make Custom SDR DVD of Windows 2003 std Server. Backup Exec is installed locally to this computer. This is actually second time when I tried to make SDR DVD and had same problem. On "Creating the custom simplified disaster recovery disk image" part computer totally froze when it reached "Creating registry hives.." point?!

Any thoughts what can cause this problem?

Opt. deduplication fails with error 2107

Afer an update to NBU 7.5.0.5 the opt. deduplication is failing between our PureDisk 6.6.3a servers with error 2107.

NBU Master and Media servers are on Win2k8/R2 64bit

Jobs are still failing. Any ideas?

Simplified Disaster Recovery Wizard doesn't show backup sets

Hi Guys,

 

I'm trying to restoe a server using SDR. However, when I get to the screen where you choose your backup sets, nothing is displayed in the "Point in time" list. This was the same tape I used about a month ago and it was working fine. I have cataloged tape and it does show all the backup sets if you do it from the BE 2012.(see below)

Does anyone know what could go wrong? I have tried a lot of things but couldn't get the backup sets to show up in SDR wizard!

BKF files grow beyond the maximum size

Hi,

 

I have two B2D folders that is located on two different NAS (made available through share).

When I created B2D folder I set default 4 GB maximum size for backup-to-disk files.

Both B2D folders are combined in a one device pool.

I use this pool only for duplication in several jobs.

At any given time, only one NAS is connected (B2D folder).

Disconnected NAS (B2D folder) is paused and all duplication jobs executing properly to the pool with the other one NAS.

When I created the B2D folders initially everything was OK, during the duplication were created BKF files with correct size (max 4 GB).

When I disconnect the NAS for a month and connect again after this period (uncheck pause for this B2D folder) the BKF files grow overe maximum size.

BKF files that have grown over the limit their "Total capacity" are more than 4 GB (most frequently equals the size of the file).

I decided to delete all BKF files in this B2D folder. I started the task duplication and new BKF files have exceeded maximum size.

Now the "Total capacity" for BKF files shows the 2 TB or 3 TB (this corresponds to the capacities of NAS).

The entire job duplication is thrown into a one BKF file instead to multiple BKF files.

 

I have:

Symantec backup Exec 2010 R3 with Sp2 and hotfixes 180429, 176937, 191248, 194471, 195395.

OS: Windows 2008 Sp2 x64

All duplication jobs are based on policy with duplication template. In duplication template in "When this job begins" is set "Overwite media" and destination media set is set with: Overwite protect period - 6 days, Append period - Infinite - Allow Append

 

 

Can anybody steer me, what is the reason for this behavior?

Backup Exec encrypting data that is already encrypted

I need a solution

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of encrypting data with BE2012 software encryption that has already been encrypted with another peice of encryption software (TrueCrypt) ?

I have a functional request for this within Backup Exec 2012 but I'm not convinced that it is a good idea to be layering multi-level encryption, or indeed if it is possible ?

Any thoughts opinions greatly received.

Access denied on SharePoint backup

Hi

I am running a backup of a server where there are some Sharepoint databases present. 

I have NOT selected the sharepoint databases, and the portal is no longer used. This means - I don't need backup of this, but since this is a customer of mine, and I don't know SharePoint very well (i.e. not at all), I only want to get rid of the backup of the portal.

I haven't selected the SharePoint portal, but when I backup the server with the databases (excluding the databases and -files connected to this SharePoint, I still get an exception that the files SHOULD be backed up via the agent for Sharepoint. 

 

V-79-57344-33925 - Error: Bdc_Service_DB_dd534f694cdb4e639198ff9f15e25943.mdf is a component of a SharePoint server farm. It must be backed up using the Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. Select it for backup from the Microsoft Server SharePoint Server Farms node.

When I then try to backup the portal - I get this error:

 

Job ended: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 2:05:07 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0001602 - Access is denied (SharePoint backup).
Final error category: Security Errors

MSDP encryption (ServerOptions=agent_crypt) (or should it be =encrypt)

Hi Forum,

Page 30 of the NetBackup Deduplication Guide v7.5 says that... by default MSDP encryption is disabled by default, but they it is recommended by Symantec.

Page 70 says that to enable encryption that we need to add "agent_crypt" to "ServerOptions=" in the ContentRouter.cfg file.

But looking at the comments in the file:

 

; [no]agent_crypt      : always disable/enable client-side encryption;
; [no]encrypt          : always disable/enable encryption;

...indicates that using "agent_crypt" instructs the client-side deduplication agent to encrypt data.

At our site we are not implementing client side deduplication so it woudl seem to me that setting :agent_crypt" won't have any effect.

 

My questions are:

1) Is "agent_crypt" really the option to use if what we are trying to achieve is encryption of the post-dedupe blocks on teh MSDP data storage local to teh MSDP media server?

2) What does the "ServerOptions=encrypt" option do, and how is it different to "agent_crypt" ?

3) If we can determine which option really does enable post-dedupe encryption - then does anyone know what the CPU overhead is ?

4) Are there any particular models of CPU (SPARC or Intel or AMD) that implement the encryption/decryption in their hardware instruction sets - i.e. are there any CPUs that are much better suited for use with MSDP encryption ?
